An independent, standards-based index designed to examine how America is honoring the promises made by its CIVIC and ECONOMIC values. It uses reliable recurring data to track the economic conditions Americans experience, and structured civic assessment to evaluate how government and institutional actions affect Americans’ practical freedom and democratic agency.
What is the US Values Index?
October Feature
As America heads into the midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3rd, questions about affordability, foreign policy and executive decision-making abound.
On Monday, November 2nd, newly released economic data will be incorporated into our Economic Dashboard, providing the freshest verified assessment of whether Americans can meet basic needs, withstand temporary setbacks, advance through work and build lasting wealth.
Throughout October, we will also share resources relevant to this Index’s stated Civic Values: Freedom of Expression, Democratic Participation and Political Citizenship, Government Belongs to Every Faith—and No Faith, Capable Self-Government, and Merit versus Concentrated Power.

Each metric uses the freshest verified observation available and names its reference period and source. Preliminary estimates and US Values Index calculations are identified explicitly.
